Xbox and Koei Tecmo are bringing back Ninja Gaiden. They won't be alone, as Platinum Games will help develop Ninja Gaiden 4, set to release in Fall 2025.

Not only that, Koei Tecmo also revealed Ninja Gaiden 2 Black. It is a complete remake using Unreal Engine 5 of the iconic second entry in the series originally released in 2008 for the Xbox 360. You'll be able to play it today.

Ninja Gaiden 4 will mark the return of protagonist Ryu Hayabusa, last seen in the divisive third entry launched in 2012. He won't be alone this time, as the action game will feature dual protagonists, with Hayabusa sharing the spotlight with newcomer Yakumo.

According to Team Ninja producer Yuji Nakao, introducing a new protagonist makes sense, considering how long the series has been absent. “We wanted a new hero to make the series more approachable for new players."

Don't worry, Hayabusa fans, as Nakao added that he "plays a significant role in the story, serving as a major challenge and growth milestone for Yakumo."

Ninja Gaiden is known for its fast-paced and bloody action. Team Ninja and Platinum Games are bringing some of that intensity to the traversal this time. New mechanics will see Yakumo move around a cyberpunk-inspired Tokyo using rails and wires, evading obstacles like trains as you progress.

Ninja Gaiden is back!

As for the difficulty, expect the classic Ninja Gaiden hardcore experience. If you've never experienced it, it's all about fairness, as Nakao described. Enemies won't throw you off your game with surprise attacks or general unpredictability.

Instead, enemies react accordingly to the player's offense and are relentless when it's their turn to attack. This creates a more balanced yet intense experience similar to a fighting game.

2025 is shaping up to be the year of Ryu Hayabusa. On top of the two titles revealed at the Xbox Direct, Ninja Gaiden: Ragebound is also set to release this year.

As mentioned, Ninja Gaiden 4 will be released in the Fall and will be available on Game Pass, Xbox Series, PlayStation 5, and PC. Ninja Gaiden 2 Black is available now on Game Pass, Xbox Series, and PC (via Steam).
