Octopath Traveler 0 Is a Reworked Mobile Game (and That’s Not a Bad Thing)

Octopath Traveler 0 was the last game shown off in Nintendo’s underwhelming Partner Showcase, and it looks like another quality entry in this series. Fans were in love with the second game, which hugely improved the storytelling, so this prequel should bring them back for more.

Interestingly, this isn’t exactly a new game, as this prequel is a reworked version of the mobile game Octopath Traveler: Champions of the Continent. That might sound like a negative, but it seems that Square Enix retooled everything to make it a proper console RPG. Mobile games tend to get a bad reputation, but seeing one get retooled for console is intriguing.

Square Enix confirmed that Octopath Traveler 0 is a new version of this mobile title, though the company’s blog claims it was mostly “inspired” by it. Regardless, it is fascinating to see a mobile game’s plot and setting reused in a new console game. Making this more interesting is how the prequel will let players customise their protagonist for the first time in the series.

Naturally, fans of previous Square Enix mobile games want to see other mobile games get the same treatment. Kingdom Hearts is the most obvious example of this, as the recently finished Kingdom Hearts X had a story many adored. Retooling this game into a proper KH entry or some kind of Warriors spinoff would get fans of this franchise talking.

Hopefully, more mobile titles get the Octopath Traveller 0 treatment and become readily available on console. There are plenty of unique mobile games that could benefit from a major console treatment. We’d love to see something like Ever Crisis: Final Fantasy VII get a proper reworking, like a “proper” Final Fantasy VII remake with this mobile title’s stylized visuals and turn-based combat.
