Overwatch 2 is planning on reworking their battle pass when Season 9 rolls around in December 2023, and this includes bringing back some season-exclusive mythic skins. The devs released the base of a hero roadmap for 2024 during Blizzcon this past weekend but were quick to confirm that the battle pass overhaul isn't yet set in stone as they're still refining the details.

However, there is an element to the battle passes that is being looked at, and that's adding more agency to the mythic skin rewarded upon completion. The mythic skin is hero-specific and totally customisable, normally earned by hitting level 80 on the premium battle pass. It is also only available during its respective season... Until now.

Overwatch 2's general manager, Walter Kong, revealed during the dev panel at Blizzcon that they're working on a way to make every single mythic skin from seasons past available to players working through the current battle pass. So this includes earlier mythics, such as Genji's Cyber Demon and Kiriko's Amaterasu skin, all the way through to the newest of the bunch, Hanzo's Onryō skin.

For newcomers to the game, this gives them a chance to earn some really awesome battle pass skins from seasons that they might not have played, plus it means they can go for mythics for characters they enjoy playing, if the current season's mythic is for a hero they never pick up.

On the surface, this could be a really cool way of making the battle pass more accessible. But some fans have pointed out that the very point of a mythic skin is that it is only ever available once, in one season, never to be seen again. It's the reason why these skins have naturally never been put into the shop. So does it cheapen the very nature of what the mythic skins are?

Either way, we're excited to get our hands on some new threads, and we're looking forward to hearing more about the newest hero after the newly debuted Mauga, the non-binary DPS hero, Venture. There are a lot of exciting changes and additions coming to Overwatch 2, but be sure to check out our hero tier list for the current meta.
