Overwatch is the latest entry in the world of weird collabs with their latest collab featuring German luxury car manufacturer Porsche.
Earlier the Blizzard Entertainment first-person shooter had announced a partnership with famous anime Cowboy Bebop. The Porsche announcement comes as a bit of a surprise due to the vast dissimilarity in both products and industries. There are many complaints about a lack of subtlety in the collab.
According to sources, players will have access to two legendary skins and multiple other Porsche-themed cosmetics. The Macan, Porsche’s new electric crossover SUV, has been revealed to be one of the premier options. We will get more details once season 10 goes live.
It cannot be said that the announcement has been met with much enthusiasm. Fans have come out to say that this is the Fornite-ification of overwatch.
One user on Reddit commented,
“It's the Fortnite-ifcation of gaming. Everyone everywhere is doing crossovers/collabs.
Even long-time brands such as Magic: The Gathering are addicted to it now. They've already done LoTR, Dr Who, Fallout, and 40K. It's only a matter of time before Overwatch gets these too." They conclude by speculating "Expect collaborations to ramp up exponentially over the next 1-2 years.”
Another user expressed their general dislike towards this new trend by stating “Am I the only one that hates this advertising crap in games? It's particularly funny since they're marketing to an audience with a small percentage that can actually afford a Porsche. Blech.”
One took a much stricter tone stating, “The fact that anyone at all is defending a billion-dollar company adding paid car ads to this cooperative shooter is beyond insane on a level I still can't wrap my head around.”
However, fans would be hoping Overwatch wouldn’t be facing downtime issues worth an extra 8 hours like Fortnite recently.
