Paper Mario The Origami King has a save-eating glitch, Nintendo working on a fix

Paper Mario: The Origami King is a wonderful, whimsical summer adventure (you can find our review here), but players are having problems late in the game with save data being deleted.

Once players have destroyed all but one of the game's streamers that are wrapped around Peach's castle, the game can destroy a player's save, along with almost thirty hours of progress!

Paper Mario: The Origami King Has A Huge Save-Eating Bug

Scarier than anything you'll encounter in the Mushroom Kingdom, beware of spoilers as we're discussing late-game content here.

Once you're en route to the last of the streamers, Mario and his party are tasked with collecting stamps which are exchanged for the "Spring of Shadows VIP" card in the Shangri-Spa area.

At this point, players gain access to a hidden spring in a cave. If you proceed, you'll be fine, but turning around essentially breaks the game because the VIP card has already been handed to Toad, and you can't reclaim the four stamps.

Even worse, the game auto-saves upon leaving the cave, so you can't revert back to an early save, either.

Thankfully, Nintendo informed Polygon that they are working on a fix - although there's no ETA.

"We are aware of reports about issues affecting some players of Paper Mario: The Origami King. We are working to resolve these issues and plan to address them in a software update. We apologize for any inconvenience."
