Crytek Requests Modder Remove Photo Mode From Crysis Remasters

Crytek's facing criticism today over shutting down photo mode mods for Crysis 2 Remastered and Crysis 3 Remastered on PC. Issuing a cease and desist letter to mod creator Frans Bouma, Crytek requested Bouma removed these photo tools "within the next seven days."

Releasing the letter via Twitter, Crytek state to Bouma that such mods aren't allowed "under the terms of our EULA," saying they "do not offer additional licence agreements for modding any of the Crysis Remastered Trilogy."

Crytek Requests Modder Remove Photo Mode From Crysis Remasters

Following this up in a Patreon post, Bouma confirmed Crytek has since replied to his initial response, stating:

The main issue with the software is that it is monetised, therefore we request that you remove the paywall. I hope you understand that we do sincerely appreciate all the support of our community, but have to balance this with protecting our copyright, and technically any mod of a Crysis Remastered game is a breach of the EULA, hence my message this morning.

Accordingly, Bouma has now removed these tools from public circulation. We reached out for an official comment from Crytek and while we've yet to receive a response, Crytek's community manager offered this statement on r/Crysis:

Hey everyone. The initial message led to a misunderstanding, and we have apologised to the modder for this. We truly appreciate all the support we receive from the community, but we also have to balance this with protecting our copyright. It can be a tricky balance to strike, and in hindsight we should have approached the situation differently.

We'll keep you informed with further developments as they happen.
