Pokemon Go Shiny Boost: Are shiny Pokemon appearing more regularly?

Pokemon Go is in a bit of tricky spot right now, with the outdoor-focused mobile RPG harder to play than ever thanks to lockdowns and curfews due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

If you've been continuing to play though you may have noticed an increase in shiny Pokemon, possibly bought on by the Buddy Up event that's currently ongoing up until April 27.

Users on Reddit have been noting that shiny variants of Feebas, previously a rare spawn, seem to be on the up – with players now encountering multiple of the sparkly fish in a single day.

Shiny Rates, a site specialising in calculating the ratio of shiny Pokemon to the standard versions based on varying sample sizes, is reporting that Feebas is spawning as a shiny once in every 63 opportunities, almost 2% of the time – and it's not the only one.

The site also reports that Meowth, Chansey, Skarmory and Sneasel are also more likely to be shiny. Chansey and Feebas are both more likely to be found in this period, so perhaps the increased chance of shiny Pokemon of those types is to be expected.

You've still got a whole weekend to take part in the Buddy Up event, which will see buddy Pokemon bring you fresh surprises more often, earn candy at double the rate they usually would, and get excited more easily.

You'll also be able to earn bonus XP for evolving any Pokemon in your collection, helping you put those candies to use.
