Will The PS5 Be Backwards Compatible?

Yes, the PS5 WILL be backwards compatible - and with more games than we'd originally anticipated.

In an interview with The Washington Post (and shared by IGN), SIE CEO and President Jim Ryan confirmed that "99 per cent" of the "thousands" PS4 games that they've tested will run on PS5.

That does beg the question of what titles are included in the final 1%, of course.

Sony's PlayStation 5 will only feature backwards compatibility with PS4 games - meaning that PS3, PS2 and PS1 titles will miss out.

This is due to it being "based in part on the PS4's architecture."

In the most recent PS5 tech deep dive, they revealed that they are aiming to make the top 100 PS4 games (based on playtime) available for launch on the new console.

However, Sony have confirmed that 4000+ PS4 titles will be supported on the new system.

All is not lost as many PS3 games are available via PlayStation Now, PlayStation Plus or by purchasing them os the PSN Stire; plus any PS1 and PS2 games that are included.

You can also play some older classics that have been remastered for the current generation of consoles - two that stand out are Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy and the Spyro Reignited Trilogy.

PlayStation Plus Collection

Sony recently revealed the PlayStation Plus Collection, an added perk for PS5 owners that will allow them access to 18 first-party PS4 titles to download.

You can find the full list of games here.

What About Older PlayStation Consoles?

Bad news, retro fans. Don't expect to play PS1, PS2, or PS3 games on your new console.

In an interview with Famitsu, Jim Ryan noted that the company “couldn’t reach the implementation” for older consoles.
