The PS5 Pro remains just a rumour at the moment, but that doesn't mean it's not going to happen.

After all, we got Sony's PS4 Pro, and a slim version of the PS5 now as well, so it's only natural that we'll be getting a more potent take on the console coming up at some point too. Sony hasn't really talked about it yet, but we're still anticipating its existence at some point in the coming years.

Even without any comment or confirmation from Sony themselves on the rumoured console, we're cautiously optimistic that we'll see a PS5 Pro in the future...but how long do we have to wait?

Here's what we know so far.

PS5 Pro release date speculation

Now let's state this early on. While we think it may be likely that we'll see a PS5 Pro in the future, we're not confirming that a PS5 Pro is 100% in the works and we'd advise you to wait until official confirmation from Sony themselves before getting your hopes up.

That being said, what we can do is speculate on when the console could arrive, if they do decide to go ahead with it, and we're hard at work scouring all the rumours for anything that could give us a clue...

News is fairly thin on the ground and rumours are therefore rife around the console. The only 'pro' version of something for PS5 has been the Dual Sense Edge - the first Xbox Elite-style controller for the console.

There have been some reports that appear to indicate that the PS5 Pro could be released around 2023 or late 2024. Hideaki Nishino, SIE Platform Experience SVP, hinted at the debut of the PS5 Pro by saying in an interview with Famitsu -

"By the end of fiscal 2022, cumulative sales (of the PS5) will exceed 37 million units, and we believe that it will be a very important time for the platform as well. I hope you will look forward to next year (2023)."

While this doesn't specifically state the PS5 Pro is on its way, there are definitely signs something big is in the works for 2023.

The PS4 Pro was released 3 years after the standard model, which would align with the prediction, but how likely is this to be the case?

Well, according to other reports, factors such as pandemic delays and the risk of devaluing the base PS5 should be considered when thinking about just how viable a PS5 Pro release would be in such a relatively short time.

What will the PS5 Pro look like?

As with the build-up to the PS5, we're now starting to see some concept renders pop up online. We highly recommend that you take these with a pinch of salt though as they're far from official.

The renderings come courtesy of Jermain Smit, aka Concept Creator, who teamed up LetsGoDigital to showcase what a PS5 Pro. They're quite impressive renderings and nowhere near as far-fetched as the ones we saw building up the PS5 release from other designers!

When could we have an announcement?

As with many of the massive announcements, Sony events are typically the best place to be.

At this time, Sony's next event hasn't received a date, but we'll update you when we hear more.

What specs will the PS5 Pro have?

We don't actually know anything about the spec sheet for the PS5 Pro, as nothing has been confirmed or announced.

CNET has touted the PS5 Pro may feature an as-yet-unannounced suite of AMD Zen 4 CPUs and RDNA-3 GPUs given the potential time frame for a prospective release date of 2023 or late 2024.

A report suggests that an updated version of the Xbox Series X and a PS5 Pro will be coming in 2023/2024, which lines up with our predictions.

This has the potential to line up with AMD's previous Zen architecture announcements as Zen 2 was announced in early October 2020, with the PS5's release date being a month later.

The big question will be if PS5 Pro will be the 8K machine many have hoped for. At the moment, the PS5 does support 8K, however, it is locked behind a firmware update.

One likely reason behind this is that 8K games are not mainstream yet and neither are 8K TVs.

We wonder if the PS5 Pro could launch with this feature already unlocked, but we'll have to wait and see.

How much will the PS5 Pro cost?

Well, according to Moore’s Law Is Dead, we could be looking at between $600-700, but we'd strongly suggest taking this with a pinch of salt, as it is by no means confirmed.

That being said, thanks to the sheer scarcity of the PS5, we'd imagine that its price won't be falling anytime soon either.

Perhaps we will see a higher price after all.
