Q*bert Rebooted: Review

Retro gamers can dive into 1980s nostalgia with the return of arcade classic, Q*bert, rebooted for a new generation. As an added bonus, the remake also includes the original Q*bert arcade game.

The reboot itself stays true to the classic level-based gameplay in which users jump on blocks in order to appropriately change their colour. However, unless my untouched talents have developed over time, the skill levels of the beginning boards seem to be much more forgiving than the original title.

Nevertheless, in due time enemies are added along with more complex board layouts, increasing the level of technique needed.

In addition to this, players are presented with an optional three challenges to complete per level, which do not stack and must be completed one at a time. Successful completion of these challenges will reward users with new character ‘skins’, as well as gems, which act as currency.

Visually, Q*bert rebooted also maintains an authentic style, incorporating a modern version of the iconic 2D original graphics. The classic square blocks used in the level design are replaced with 3D hexagons, while the overall details have been enhanced.

Within the reboot, the controls have also been improved slightly, yet they are still sensitive enough to ensure that users must monitor their actions in order to prevent themselves from jumping off the board or travelling in an unwanted direction.

Personally, I found the most disappointing aspect of the game to be its music and soundtracks. While most likely an attempt to provide a retro feel, the basic music on the “level select” menu quickly becomes repetitive and may induce a headache if you don’t choose a level fast enough.

The music during gameplay is much easier on the ears, but still becomes very monotonous - and to make matters worse, the game also lacks audio controls to adjust the volume or mute the sound.

Ultimately, the re-introduction of Q*bert can be enjoyed by all gamers, however, it will most likely appeal to fans of the classic arcade game. Although Q*bert rebooted successfully re-creates an authentic, yet modern, retro experience, the game could be improved through even the smallest additions.

For example, the option to adjust your sound volume or showcase your high scores – a common feature of arcade games – would be welcomed inclusions.

Hopefully Q*bert Rebooted will receive some updates in the future.
