The Resident Evil renaissance is in full effect, with Capcom creating brand-new entries in the survival horror series alongside amazing remakes of Resident Evil 2, 3, and 4. According to recent leaks, Capcom isn’t just focusing on numbered entries for its slew of remakes but also on one of the series’ most underrated games: Code Veronica.
While Capcom is certainly working on a Resident Evil 5 remake and Resident Evil 9, it’s also claimed that Code Veronica will be remade for modern platforms. As an integral part of the overall Resident Evil narrative, a proper remake of this often-forgotten spin-off would be great for new fans.
Renowned Capcom leaker Dusk Golem revealed that the Code Veronica remake is being developed alongside a remake of Resident Evil Zero. While not as integral to the Resident Evil story, Zero’s intriguing hook but flawed execution makes it the perfect target for a modern remake.
“A remake of Resident Evil Zero and Code Veronica is in development right now,” Dusk Golem claimed. “I've talked to many others behind the scenes about this at this point. It's something I heard over a year ago, and I think it was going to get out whether I was the one to say it or not.”
Trusted games journalist Andy Robinson, the editor-in-chief of VGC, quickly corroborated Dusk Golem’s claims. In response to the initial claim, Robinson said: “Listen to this man.”
While the existence of a Resident Evil Zero remake is interesting, fans are far more excited for a remake of Resident Evil: Code Veronica. The game did see an extended version released on the PlayStation 2 in the form of Code Veronica X, but it failed to sell as much as the series’ numbered entries amidst a zombified horde of spin-offs.
Nevertheless, fans who played the Dreamcast original believe the game to be the real Resident Evil 3 instead of Jill Valentine’s adventure in Raccoon City. With both Claire and Chris Redfield as playable characters, Code Veronica actually pushes the Resident Evil story forward instead of being a cool, but ultimately less important, adventure.
There’s currently no scheduled release date for Resident Evil: Code Veronica Remake or Resident Evil Zero Remake.
