The Moth and Combination Lock Puzzle in Silent Hill 2 Remake is encountered relatively early in the game. The remake differs from the original game by replacing the atmospheric focus of this room with a combination lock puzzle.

This puzzle is tricky because it requires solving a combination lock and finding all the hidden moth symbols, which can be easily missed. Here’s how to solve the Moth and Combination Lock Puzzle in Silent Hill 2 Remake:

How To Solve the Moth and Combination Lock Puzzle in Silent Hill 2 Remake

After progressing through the Wood Side Apartments, you will eventually cross over into the Blue Creek Apartments. Once you enter Room 202, you will notice several displays of moths pinned to boards. In total, there are five moth displays within the room.

These moths have symbols on their wings, which will be key to solving the puzzle. However, some moths may not be in plain sight. Be sure to push aside furniture like cabinets or wardrobes to uncover the last few moths.

Each moth's wings have different symbols that are important for solving the puzzle. These symbols represent numbers you’ll use in a series of math equations near the combination lock.

The total counts of these symbols are:

  • Crescent Moons: 8
  • Eyes (or dots): 5
  • Skulls: 2

Make sure to tally up the exact number of each symbol. The equations won't work correctly if you miss any of the displays.

Next to the lock, you can move on to solving the math equations scrawled on the wall. These equations use the symbols from the moth's wings.

The equations differ based on the puzzle difficulty setting, but for the regular difficulty, here’s how the math works:

  • First Equation: Crescent Moons (8) - Eyes (5) = 3
  • Second Equation: Skulls (2) + Eyes (5) = 7
  • Third Equation: Eyes (5) - Skulls (2) = 3

This means the combination for the lock is 3-7-3. However, if you're playing on a higher difficulty, the equations might be more complex, and you'll need to rework the symbols accordingly.

Here’s how the puzzle typically works on hard difficulty:

  • First Equation: Crescent Moons (8) + Skulls (2) - Eyes (5) = 5
  • Second Equation: Eyes (5) × Skulls (2) - Crescent Moons (8) = 2
  • Third Equation: (Skulls (2) + Crescent Moons (8)) ÷ Eyes (5) = 2

After calculating the combination, approach the lock and input 3-7-3 (or the appropriate code for your difficulty setting). Once you’ve entered the correct numbers, press the Accept button to unlock the door.

Upon unlocking the door, you’ll enter a room where James encounters a hole in the wall. Despite the eerie nature of the situation, James must reach into the hole to pull out the Second Hand. This item is necessary for the Clock Puzzle.
