Sony Quietly Pulls PS Now Cards from U.K. Retailers

Sony is directing U.K. retailers to remove all PS Now subscription cards from their stock by January 21, a new report from GamesBeat's Jeff Grubb says. GamesBeat received a copy of an internal directive from GAME where management said:

"Stores have until the close of day Wednesday 19, January to remove all POS and ESD cards from all customer-facing areas and update their digital bays in line with this week’s upcoming commercial update."

GamesBeat reached out to Sony for comment and received a slightly vague response.

“Globally, we are moving from PlayStation Now gift cards to focus on our current cash denomination PlayStation gift cards, which can be redeemed for PlayStation Now,” a PlayStation spokesperson said.

Grubb also said he's heard U.S. and Canadian retailers are doing the same, though had no concrete evidence of it.

While the PlayStation spokesperson's comment could be entirely correct, the move is causing some stir after a recent Bloomberg report said Sony is looking to shelve PS Now in favor of a more robust, tiered subscription service.

The report coincides with Jim Ryan's comments in 2021 about planning something to compete with Xbox Game Pass, though as yet, Sony has made no announcement about its subscription strategy.
