- Spyro 4 is in development at Toys for Bob
- Toys for Bob recently split from Microsoft and Activion, but remains open to work with them
- The developer previously worked on the Spyro Reignited Trilogy and Crash Bandicoot 4
The developers of Crash Bandicoot 4 are reportedly working on Spyro the Dragon 4, a new legacy sequel to the original PlayStation trilogy for new platforms.
Developer Toys for Bob was beloved for its remaster work with the iconic purple dragon in the form of the Spyro Reignited Trilogy. Following its work on Crash Bandicoot 4: It’s About Time, fans have been eagerly awaiting the studio’s take on Spyro.
According to renowned Crash Bandicoot insider Canadian Guy Eh?, Toys for Bob is currently working on a new game in the Spyro series. Despite the recent layoffs of almost 2,000 Xbox employees, especially Toys for Bob, the studio is still alive and actively working on games.
However, following the recent layoffs, Toys for Bob split from Activision and Microsoft. Instead of being beholden to those companies, the studio may be working for them on a contract basis like many third-party developers. (Think Square Enix making Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth for PlayStation.)
“Spyro 4 is in development. That's a statement. No theory crafting, no evidence-based assumptions, no conspiracies, or even a heavy-handed hint," he told viewers. “As of March 2024, Spyro 4 is currently in development.”
According to the insider, Spyro 4 development started in January 2024, just a month before announcing its independence. However, the studio has gone on record saying it would continue to work with Microsoft and Activision whenever appropriate.
Spyro 4 has frequently been teased by the studio, including the developer’s recent announcement of its independence. Fans of the studio were told to “keep horns on”, an obvious reference to the adorable and iconic purple dragon.
Since the release of Spyro: Year of the Dragon in 2000, the franchise has not been as successful as it should’ve. With underwhelming entries such as The Hero’s Tail trilogy, and then a pivot into the Skylanders Toys to Life franchise, Spyro lost a lot of its luster. However, the release of the Spyro: Reignited Trilogy remasters brought the purple dragon back to life.
Hopefully, Spyro the Dragon 4 will be a glorious return for the iconic video game mascot. Now an Xbox mascot, will the sequel be an exclusive release? Or will Spyro fly across all platforms again?
