It’s been 6 years since Star Trek’s last big-screen outing in Star Trek Beyond. After years of speculation, we've finally had news on the next big film.
During a recent Paramount Investors Day Presentation, the series’ producer, J.J. Abrams announced that Star Trek 4 is warping straight ahead.
Star Trek 4 Moves Forward With the Original Cast Returning
Abrams also revealed that the long-awaited sequel begins filming before the end of 2022.
We are thrilled to say that we are hard at work on a new ‘Star Trek’ film that will be shooting by the end of the year that will be featuring our original cast and some new characters that I think are going to be really fun and exciting and help take ‘Star Trek’ into areas that you’ve just never seen before.
Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, and Zoe Saldana are in negotiations to return as Captain Kirk, Spock, and Uhura respectively. Karl Urban, John Cho, and Simon Pegg are also in talks to rejoin the Enterprise.
The cast was due to return for the sequel in 2018, with a time-twisting story that would’ve reunited Pine with his father, played by Chris Hemsworth. But these discussions eventually fell flat.
The ensemble famously brought these characters to life in 2009 with a more modern take on the beloved franchise. Abrams directed the picture and followed it with Star Trek into Darkness.
Through his Bad Robot banner, Abrams then produced Star Trek Beyond, which was shepherded by Fast and Furious’ Justin Lin. The disappointing box office tally of the 2016 film had put the series on hold.
Since then, Star Trek rediscovered its roots through TV and streaming. From Star Trek Discovery to Patrick Stewart’s reprisal as Picard, the brand has been running strong on the small screen.
Star Trek 4 will be directed by Matt Shakman, the filmmaker behind Marvel’s Wandavision, with Abrams returning once again as producer.
