Breakdown

  • Ubisoft responds to the Star Wars Outlaws controversy
  • The company says Jabba the Hutt will be in every version of the game
  • As for the Jamba's Gambit mission, that is "optional" DLC only available to Season Pass owners

Star Wars Outlaws angered a ton of gamers when it was announced that a special Jabba the Hut mission would be exclusive to Season Pass owners. Ubisoft has since clarified the move, saying that Jabba will play a major part in the game and that this DLC mission is “optional.”

According to a statement sent to Eurogamer, Jabba’s Hutt Cartel is one of the major crime syndicates in the game so the iconic villain won’t be restricted to DLC. However, the “Jabba’s Gambit” mission will stay locked behind a paywall, as this has been described as “optional” by Ubisoft.

"To clarify, Jabba the Hutt and the Hutt Cartel are one of the main syndicates in Star Wars Outlaws and will be part of the experience for everyone who purchases the game, regardless of edition," said the spokesperson. "The 'Jabba's Gambit' mission is an optional, additional mission with the Hutt Cartel along Kay and Nix's journey across the Outer Rim. This mission will be available to those who purchase the season pass or an edition of the game which includes the season pass."

Despite the backlash, it seems that this mission will remain DLC for Star Wars Outlaws, which is pretty annoying. Locking content that might have an interesting story behind it feels wrong, especially if it's going to launch alongside the game.

Fans have begrudgingly accepted Season Passes as a common part of gaming, as it means the devs will be releasing this after the game launches. Obviously, releasing the Jabba’s Gambit mission alongside the game and locking it behind paid DLC is just plain greedy.

While disappointing, seeing the numerous special editions for Star Wars Outlaws is far from surprising, as it’s become a Ubisoft cliche at this point. It’s a shame too because the game looks pretty good, but the reliance on Season Passes and various special editions has angered many single-player players.

Star Wars Outlaws will be coming to PS5, Xbox Series, and PC on August 30. The release date was accidentally leaked by Ubisoft Japan before the company unveiled it themselves.
