Player Unknown's Battlegrounds (PUBG) is now a free-to-play game as of yesterday and, as expected, its player count has seen a significant jump following this move.
The latest SteamCharts report (as seen by NME) listed 667,399 players playing PUBG on the PC platform over the last 24 hours. It's the highest peak player count since March 2021, doubling what they reached across December. It's still a long way from the all-time high, which saw a massive 3,236,027 player count back in January 2018.

That said, not everything about this new model is free. Players can create a basic PUBG account, providing access to the majority of content from the original paid version. However, that excludes the ranked mode and custom match modes, alongside other items. Those are available for $12.99 in the Battlegrounds Plus upgrade. If you previously bought PUBG, you've got the Plus upgrade for free.
