Breakdown
- TMNT: Splintered Fate is an upcoming roguelike coming to Nintendo Switch
- The four turtles will attempt to rescue Master Splinter, who is lost in the multiverse
- Fans waiting for Hades 2 will want to check this out
TMNT: Splintered Fate is the latest video game adventure featuring the iconic Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and should whet the appetite of roguelike fans before Hades 2 comes out. With an interesting multiverse set-up, fast-paced combat, and online co-op, this new roguelike could end up being a fan-favorite title for the heroes in a half-shell.
Revealed as part of Nintendo’s Indie World presentation, Splintered Fate has Leonardo, Donatello, Raphael, and Michaelangelo go through varied locations as they attempt to rescue Master Splinter. Going through various dimensions, the turtles will face familiar foes like Beebop, Rocksteady, and Shredder as they attempt to find their master and bring him home.
Similar to games like Hades, TMNT: Splintered Fate will have players acquire power-ups during their run and lose them when said run ends. Players will be able to get permanent power-ups via currency they collect in-game called “Artifacts,” though their uses weren’t shown during the trailer.
Based on what was shown during Indie World, this looks like a quality roguelike with good visuals and combat that seems satisfying. The fact that this game also supports online co-op with up to four players is another good sign, making it feel like a true TMNT experience. No local co-op was announced during the trailer, so fans will have to stick with Shredder’s Revenge for couch brawling thrills.
Prior to the reveal of TMNT: Splintered Fate, the only roguelike-experience these characters ever had was during, well, Shredder’s Revenge. The game’s paid DLC added a roguelike Survival Mode where they could get power-ups per run. It was very similar to the Survival Mode seen in Streets of Rage 4, which makes sense since they have the same developer.
With Hades 2 beginning its technical test on PC, hopefully leading to an Early Access date, Splintered Fate should satisfy fans waiting for that adventure. Even if you don’t like the Turtles, the cool visuals, interesting premise, and quick combat should be enough to make anyone say “Cowabunga.”
TMNT: Splintered Fate will be coming to Nintendo Switch as a temporary console exclusive, implying that a PC release is also incoming. Fans will be able to pick this game up in July.
