What Was Scalebound?
Scalebound would have been an action RPG with that signature PlatinumGames flare. Playing a young man named Drew, we would've taken on numerous enemies in a fantasy world, packed with various weapons.
If that wasn't enough for you, Drew can also command his dragon companion Thuban to lay waste on his enemies.
Why Was Scalebound Cancelled?
On the Cutscenes YouTube channel, Vice President of PlatinumGames, Hideki Kamiya, detailed why Scalebound ended up getting cancelled back in 2017.
Kamiya admitted his team was not experienced enough with the Unreal engine and that led to a lot of difficulty in making the game. Aiming for a photorealistic look and adding online features to Scalebound was supposedly what led to the cancellation.
Since then, Kamiya has taken full responsibility for the game not coming out. In the Cutscenes video posted above, Kamiya apologised to both players and Microsoft for not fulfilling their promise.
Is Scalebound Getting a Revival?
During an interview with IGN Japan, Platinum President Atsushi Inaba and Hideki Kamiya actively expressed interest in bringing Scalebound back. Inaba says that they want to have proper discussions with Microsoft to bring it back.
Kamiya had this to say about bringing Scalebound back, even calling out to Phil Spencer himself:
We did a lot of work on it, and it’s no use Microsoft keeping the game in its current form, so we’d like to do something about it (laughs). Phil! Let’s do it together!
That’s everything we know. Will we see a Scalebound revival from PlatinumGames and Microsoft? One party has shown interest, so let’s hope the other one does as well.
