Following the deal in early May between Square Enix and Embracer Group, which saw the Deus Ex IP and a host of studios and rights to other games change hands, the idea of another entry in the series arriving relatively soon would be surprising to say the least.

However, this hasn’t stopped some fans from theorising that this could be exactly the case.

The speculation comes as users on Reddit grapple with the mystery surrounding the meaning of a post from Adam Jensen voice actor Elias Toufexis.

Fans Quickly Poke Holes in New Game Theory

Taking to Twitter recently, Toufexis revealed: “I’ve been voice acting this great character in this huge AAA game for a few years. This year I’ve been voice directing a slew of actors in that same game.”

He then added: “Today I act in the morning and direct in the afternoon. It’s a trip, man. Can’t wait to share.”

The tweet, which would seem to suggest voice-over work for a different game to Deus Ex, also included a meme alluding to Toufexis having signed an NDA regarding the project.

Nevertheless, user Nuclear_Pizza posted the tweet in the subreddit r/GamingLeaksAndRumours, suggesting that it could signify the Deus Ex series already receiving attention from Embracer following the acquisition, saying: “Deus Ex Mankind Divided had a lot of cut content, leaving a lot on the table for a sequel to wrap up. Might be possible that a team is working early production on a new Deus Ex game based on the old concepts for 5.”

However, other users quickly poured water on the fire, with Magikarp125 responding: “IMDB says he’s The Penguin in Gotham Knights, could be in reference to that. I don’t want to get my hopes up for a new Deus Ex.”

User RotaryRoad concurred, saying: “I also think it's The Penguin. Deus Ex would be so early in development that doing VO would be insane”, while DrCinnabon added: “The only way this is possible is if Square had the game in production before selling. There is no other way.”

This prompted Nuclear_Pizza to reconsider their theory, saying: “On repeated reads, it seems that this is actually a role in an unannounced title that's been in production for several years.”
