Liam Hemsworth may be taking over the role of Netflix’s live-action Geralt of Rivia. However, before that even hits streaming, Netflix has an animated Witcher property set to release next month with The Witcher: Sirens of the Deep.
This time around, Geralt will be dealing with this world’s version of sea people, and it looks like a neat adventure filled with all kinds of things fans love about the series.
The Witcher: Sirens of the Deep
The movie looks to have Geralt on another adventure with the bard Jaskier, and it seems they will find themselves clashing with this world’s version of Aquaman and his kingdom of fish folk. Check this out:
According to GameSpot, this movie takes place in the middle of the first season’s timeline, shortly after Geralt meets Yennefer of Vengerberg and is trying to forget her. The movie will be based on the short story A Little Sacrifice by Andrzej Sapokowski, and Geralt and Yennefer will be reunited after they’re both dragged into this war between humans and merpeople.
It’s also worth noting that the movie will also present another love interest for Geralt in the form of Essi Daven. Fans know that Yennefer is ultimately the true love of Geralt’s story, but that doesn’t mean nobody can have fun shipping him with other characters he meets along the way.
No Liam Hemsworth?
Though Liam Hemsworth is set to play Geralt in live-action instead of Henry Cavill, it looks like he won’t be involved with Sirens of the Deep. Instead, Geralt's voice will be provided by Doug Cockle, who also voices Geralt in the game.
Surprisingly, the rest of the movie's characters will be voiced by their live-action counterparts, like Anya Chalotra, who will reprise Yennefer. Joey Batey will voice Jaskier. Christina Wren will voice the new character, Essi.
As for director Kang Hei Chui, this looks to be the first animated project he leads. Chui was attached as a storyboard artist for The Witcher: Nightmare of the Wolf, and he’s also worked on other projects like the Voltron revival and Teen Titans GO! To the Movies.
The Future of Witcher
The Witcher has lost a huge star with Henry Cavill, but it looks like Netflix is ready to soldier on with two more seasons starring Hemsworth as the new Geralt. The fourth and fifth seasons are shooting back-to-back, with Season 4 expected to premiere later this year.
It’s unclear how they will deal with Cavill getting replaced, but it has been said that this next season will act as a soft reboot. Hopefully, showrunner Lauren S. Hissrich manages to stick the landing because the show has lost a lot of good faith, especially with how Cavill exited, citing creative differences with the showrunner.
The Witcher: Sirens of the Deep comes to Netflix on Feb. 11.
