Breakdown

  • Assassin's Creed Codename Red is officially called Assassin's Creed Shadows
  • The game will take place in Feudal Japan with a male or female protagonist
  • A new trailer is coming very soon

Assassin's Creed's long-awaited Japanese adventure is coming, and it finally has a proper name. Known previously under the codename RED, Assassin's Creed Shadows is the mysterious official name behind Ubisoft's exciting new adventure.

Codename Red was announced back in 2022 with no release date or even official name. As the next game in the AC franchise, Ubisoft has finally announced its official title and a date for its first trailer.

Revealed in a tweet, Assassin's Creed Shadows is currently the official name for Assassin's Creed Japan. The new game will have its debut trailer on May 15, 2024 at 9 AM Pacific Time. Judging from the reveal of Assassin's Creed Mirage last year, we'll see a more detailed trailer during Summer Games Fest or a Ubisoft Direct livestream event.

There's currently no Assassin's Creed Shadows release date, but we can take a quick guestimate at when we will see the game launch on modern platforms. Judging from the franchise's history as a Fall release, Shadows will likely launch sometime in late October, just like the past few AC games.
At the time of writing, not much is known about the story of Assassin's Creed Shadows, but we do have a few hints from its initial trailer. In the original reveal when the game was called Codename Red, the Assassin's Creed timeline split was teased with both past segments set in Feudal Japan and modern segments set in present or future Tokyo.

Multiple leaks have also claimed that the game will allow you to pick either a male samurai to play as or a female shinobi as you explore Fuedal Japan. While no timeline has been established yet, we would expect the game to take place around the 1600s as the Portuguese attempt to establish a stronghold in Japan. (In this instance, the Portuguese would be this game's Templars.)

With multiple Japanese history games taking off in recent years, such as Ghost of Tsushima and Rise of the Ronin, Assassin's Creed's foray into Japan is still just as exciting. In fact, we can't wait to see what Ubisoft pulls off.

Assassin's Creed Shadows is expected to release on PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox later this year.
