Return to Castle Wolfenstein is an all-time classic and is considered by many to be one of the defining first-person shooters ever released. Now that Bethesda is taking a break from the great Wolfenstein franchise, fans have decided to remaster Return themselves and it looks good.

Currently called RealRTCW (via PCGamesN), this is essentially an unofficial remaster that makes the visuals and controls feel a lot more modern. The graphics are better, enemy AI has been reworked, controls take inspiration from shooters like Halo, this is a ton of work that is being done for free.

Quality-of-life features have also been added to this unofficial Wolfenstein remaster, including a new checkpoint system that will make progression easier. Alongside a more manageable UI to go through, these are changes that any gamer can appreciate in the long run.

Many gamers are still waiting for Bethesda to do something with the Wolfenstein franchise, as The New Order and The New Colossus were beloved by many. Players were less enthused by Youngblood, a spin-off that decided to focus more on co-op and loot, but that shouldn’t be the game that ends this franchise.

Even if it is a bit dated these days, the original Return to Wolfenstein is still seen by many as a pretty good installment of the series. Giving players a more grounded sequel to work with, the game still offers plenty of nazis to kill and plenty of set-pieces to keep your attention. As a PC game in the early 2000’s, it might be a bit difficult for more modern gamers but that’s what this mod is for.

Fans won’t have to worry too much about the legality of this, as the mod is available on Steam for all to use. Naturally, players will need a copy of Return to Castle Wolfenstein in order to make this work, but that game goes on sale pretty often.
