Hironobu Sakaguchi may have created Final Fantasy, but it looks like the man is done with this series and fans need to stop waiting for his return. Sakaguchi’s upcoming Fantasian re-release shows that he’s moved on and would rather enjoy the Square Enix franchise as a consumer.

During an interview with Bloomberg (via IGN), Sakaguchi revealed that he would rather enjoy the series instead of working on it again. The series creator is currently in love with Final Fantasy XIV, so he just wants to play these games instead of working on them again.

“If I take on the Final Fantasy brand again, I don’t know if I’ll be able to genuinely enjoy Final Fantasy XIV as much,” Sakaguchi said.

Sakaguchi has also said that he has no interest bringing back Lost Odyssey and Blue Dragon, which is a shame since they’re beloved JRPGs. Oddly enough, he does want to see his old mobile game Terra Battle return, since that game has been de-listed from Apple and Android devices.

For the most part, it seems that the Final Fantasy series is doing fine without Sakaguchi, even if it would be great to have him back. Despite fans arguing about its status as an RPG, most agree that Final Fantasy XVI was a quality title with great action. Critics and fans also really enjoyed Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, as it quickly became the highest-rated entry in this series.

Thankfully, most fans will be able to see how good Sakaguchi is when Fantasian Neo Dimension comes to consoles and PC later this year. Originally stuck on Apple Arcade, this re-release of Fantasian is coming to PS4, PS5, Switch, and PC this Winter and it will have new features like voice acting.

Anyone who wants to play classic Final Fantasy games can pick up the Pixel Remaster series on PS4, Nintendo Switch, PC, and mobile.
