Cyberpunk 2077 has been out for a just over a year and whilst it launched in a sorry state, it managed to win back some fans thanks to numerous patches and updates spread throughout 2021. Even then, the game is still not exactly perfect and even today still has many problems, glitches and issues. Understandable then that CD Projekt Red pushed their next-gen update for the game and the next big patch - Cyberpunk 2077 Update 1.5 - to early 2022.
More recently the game benefitted from a recent Steam Winter Sale which dropped the price of the game and at half price it shot to the top half of Steam’s top 10 best sellers. So clearly, there's still interest in the game. However, whilst this seemed like it might have been a one-off, some new info from Steam shows that the game has been quietly doing well throughout 2021.
Cyberpunk 2077 Sold Well Despite Major Bugs, Fiasco In Development
Earlier this week, Valve released a bunch of info detailing the best games of 2021 on the platform. Remarkably Cyberpunk 2077 has fairly pretty well.
As part of this rundown, there are various categories. Whilst Cyberpunk doesn't make the cut within the 'platinum' or 'gold' sections, which are filled with the likes of Dota 2, GTA 5, Apex Legends, and many more ongoing titles, it does make the 'Silver' tier.
The silver tier includes titles like The Sims 4, Path of Exile, ARK Survival Evolved, and plenty more titles. As noted by Kotaku, the “top sellers” list is based on revenue made, not copies sold. Given Cyberpunk doesn't have the benefit of in-game microtransactions or DLC, it would find it hard to rank much higher than where it is currently. If anything the game's probably done better than expected on Steam, especially when ranking alongside other single-player games that have been lauded by critics, like Resident Evil Village.
2022 should be fairly promising for CD Projekt Red and Cyberpunk, we know the game will continue to push out updates and patches. As VCG reported previously, CD Projekt Red president Adam Kiciński believes Cyberpunk 2077 "will sell for years.”
Fingers crossed the devs keep up the good work, because there's a good game in there, and if the game keeps selling well, it's possible the developers could eventually turn this project around in 2022.
