There was a lot of hype surrounding the release of Cyberpunk 2077 back in 2020, and it all came crashing down when CD Projekt Red released a buggy mess that was nowhere near a completed game.
CDPR spent the following years trying to ‘fix’ the game, and they’ve done so with the latest DLC Phantom Liberty. Now they have their eyes set on the sequel, which could feature something they never got to bring to the first game—multiplayer.
Multiplayer in the Cyberpunk 2077 Sequel?
While CDPR is keeping things under wraps with Project Orion (the Cyberpunk sequel’s working title), some think that multiplayer will finally be added to the game this time. Game Rant reports that some job listings from CDPR explicitly mention multiplayer—which could be all confirmation fans need to know that it’s coming.
In 2019, developers weren’t shy about including multiplayer in the game. Here’s one of their recruitment posts:
Sadly, they never really got to incorporate it into the game. After the disastrous launch, the developers endlessly worked on fixing the game, ensuring it ran properly on all the available platforms and reducing as many bugs as possible.
The result ended up in the multiplayer being thrown on the back burner.
It’s What Everyone Wants
Despite the first Cyberpunk not having multiplayer, all the elements are there for it to be added to the game. For one, Night City is massive, and there’s enough room for players to walk around and share the game.
What’s more, the entire format of the game copies the same crime genre as Grand Theft Auto—except everything is in a future setting. With GTA Online setting the standard for an online multiplayer crime game, CDPR should have no problem tweaking that formula just a little more to make it more novel for their own brand of street criminals.
Mods to the Rescue
Despite CDPR keeping the sequel's status under wraps, players have also been working out ways to have a multiplayer version of Cyberpunk. There is even news of a mod in development that will eventually put players into one lobby where they can interact as their characters. Here’s a look at it in action:
It’s not clear yet how players will be able to share missions and quests in the game, but it should provide the groundwork for what CDPR was originally planning with the game, but they ultimately just couldn’t go for it.
With the next priority said to be the next Witcher title, it should be a while before fans get an update on the next Cyberpunk title. Hopefully, the devs will manage to stick the landing this time come launch.
No release date has been announced for the Cyberpunk sequel, but Cyberpunk 2077’s most polished version, Phantom Liberty, is now available for PC, Xbox Series X|S, and PS5.
