Two years after the success of the Resident Evil 4 Remake, CAPCOM is gradually rekindling excitement for its upcoming Resident Evil titles. Rumors are circulating online about a potential remake of Resident Evil Zero and the elusive next chapter of the series, Resident Evil 9.

X (Twitter) user @AestheticGamer1, also known as Dusk Golem, speculated on an X thread that Resident Evil Zero may coincide with the series' 30th Anniversary Celebration next year.

Known for his reputable Resident Evil leaks, Dusk Golem provided key insights into why he believes this remake is plausible. He noted that Screen Gems/Constantin Film, the studio responsible for the Resident Evil movies, must retain the rights to the Resident Evil brand for filmmaking purposes.

He said, “They need to release a new Resident Evil film every five fiscal years.” He pointed out that the upcoming reboot, directed by Zach Cregger (known for Barbarian), will begin filming soon and is expected to be released next year, following the 2021 release of Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City.

In a series of posts on X, Dusk Golem expressed his belief that Zach Cregger’s new film will be an adaptation of Resident Evil Zero, the first game in the franchise chronologically.

For those unaware, Resident Evil: Zero features Rebecca Chambers and Billy Coen from the S.T.A.R.S. Bravo Team as they explore an abandoned Umbrella Corporation facility. Fans familiar with the series are well aware of the tragic fate that awaits the protagonists and how the story leads into Alpha Team’s narrative.

However, some fans are perplexed by CAPCOM’s decision to remake Zero, given that Resident Evil Code: Veronica is often seen as having more appeal to long-time fans of the franchise.

Dusk Golem believes that this significant remake—the film and the game—will herald a new era in CAPCOM’s Resident Evil marketing strategy, dubbed “Beginning & Ending of the Saga.” This strategy is expected to encompass all modern Resident Evil titles leading up to the highly anticipated Resident Evil 9, which has yet to be officially announced.

The Resident Evil Zero Remake and the new film will likely be released in tandem, signaling CAPCOM’s intention to reignite interest in the series’ origins.

One noteworthy point from Dusk Golem’s speculation is that the Resident Evil Zero remake might also be released on the Nintendo Switch 2. CAPCOM is rumored to be striking a marketing deal with Nintendo. While not expected to be a console exclusive, the game will likely be a multi-platform project.

In addition to discussing the Resident Evil Zero remake, Dusk Golem shared insights on the development of Resident Evil 9, which he believes is on the horizon. He speculated that 2026 will be a pivotal year for CAPCOM’s Resident Evil franchise, with multiple significant announcements expected.

Who knows? Fans might even catch a glimpse of a teaser trailer for Resident Evil 9 at this year’s Summer Games Fest or during the 2025 Game Awards.
