Alan may be trapped in the Dark Place, but he’s certainly cashing in now. Remedy Entertainment’s latest investment report confirms that Alan Wake 2 has officially sold 2 million copies.
The game has finally recouped its development and marketing costs, paving the way for profit-generating royalties.
This milestone adds to Alan Wake 2’s growing list of achievements, including multiple high-profile awards — most notably, Best Narrative and Best Game Direction at The Game Awards 2023. It also came close to dethroning Larian Studios’ critically acclaimed RPG, Baldur’s Gate 3, for Game of the Year.
Much of Alan Wake 2’s success can be credited to creative director Sam Lake’s clear vision, which pushed the franchise into new territory: survival horror. No longer the same game from 2010 — where Alan merely aimed his flashlight at the Taken, hoping they'd burst in slow motion — the sequel’s shift to horror marked a turning point for the series. It proved that Remedy Entertainment could seamlessly blend multiple genres into a powerful metafiction narrative.
The introduction of a second protagonist, Saga Anderson, further deepened the game’s story and appeal. Unlike Alan or Control’s Jesse Faden, Saga isn’t well-versed in the supernatural. Instead, she’s an unwilling participant, caught in the chaos of the Dark Place and Bright Falls.
This dual-protagonist approach also worked in favor of new players, especially those unfamiliar with the Remedy Connected Universe. By reintroducing key characters and themes, Alan Wake 2 serves as an accessible entry point for newcomers while still rewarding longtime fans.
The game’s two DLCs, Night Springs and The Lake House, expanded the story beyond Alan himself, enriching the Remedy Connected Universe with additional lore and high-concept supernatural science fiction.
Alan Wake 2’s financial success isn’t the only bit of good news for Remedy. The studio’s three-player cooperative multiplayer shooter, FBC: Firebreak, is launching soon. Meanwhile, both Alan Wake 2 and the highly anticipated Max Payne 1 & 2 Remake are now in full production.
