Season 17 of Apex Legends is in full swing, and as part of the most recent seasonal update for Respawn Entertainment’s battle royale, the developers introduced a brand-new progression tree for players to work through.
Known as weapon mastery, players have the ability to unlock a variety of rewards by ranking up guns and completing milestone challenges to encourage players to use all weapons on the Apex Legends weapon tier list.
While some dropping into the action are enjoying the grind, one fan claims the new progression system is ‘awful.’
Is Apex Legends weapon mastery awful?
According to Reddit user Anonftbl, “the whole system seems low effort and poorly designed by someone who has no idea how the game works.”
“Apex has been crying out for a good fun progression system,” says the frustrated fan. “Disappointing is an understatement.” Other members of the community are in agreement, too. “I think it was a missed opportunity to not have a specific skin for each maxed weapon prestige,” replies one user who believes Respawn Entertainment should take a leaf out of the Call of Duty playbook.
Modern Warfare 2 and Warzone 2 both utilise a weapon mastery system, with players earning a gold camouflage for completing all of the challenges associated with a gun. Once all of the challenges are complete, they can unlock the coveted Orion camouflage to showcase their achievements.
Copying Call of Duty might not act as the best alternative, but fans are already suggesting simple adjustments to Apex Legends weapon mastery in order to improve the system. “Could have made the guns look like Heirloom Shards,” says one fan.
It’s worth noting that the weapon mastery system is still in its infancy and there’s plenty of time for the developers to adjust the system and provide even better rewards for players to earn.
