Capcom’s Resident Evil 2 remake may have sold millions of copies on console and PC, but it doesn’t have that same luck on iPhone. Recent sales data has shown that the game has now tanked on iOS, showing that full console titles don’t translate well on phones. Even with recent controller grips for phones making gaming easier, that just wasn’t enough for some fans.
According to Mobilegamer.biz, the game has made $100,000 through in-game purchases. This is because the game starts out as a free trial and then has to be paid for. Originally, the third-person horror title was only available for $10 but after January 9 the game reverted back to $40.
This was part of an initiative where Capcom wanted to treat mobile gaming like it was something big. When the iPhone 15 Pro was released, Capcom announced the Resident Evil 2 remake and Resident Evil 4 remake for the supposed gaming phones. Sadly, as the above data shows, neither game has sold well and are going way below expectations.
Aside from mobile gamers preferring quick and simple experiences, these games just play better on the console. Granted, mobile gamers now have the option to pick up various controller grips for the system, but that’s not enough for every iPhone owner. Plus, these games have gone for a lot cheaper on console and PC, making the move even more confusing.
Fans who want a handheld experience for Resident Evil 2 remake should pick it up for a PC handheld like the Steam Deck or ROG Ally X. The Switch 2 is also coming out soon, which should mean that Nintendo’s new console can finally get a native version.
