PS5 consoles are compatible with PS4 games, but older consoles haven't fared so well. With selection limited to PS Now's cloud streaming for PS3 games and a scattered choice of remasters/re-releases, a new patent suggests Sony's working on wider PlayStation backward compatibility.
As seen on Gaming Bolt, PS5 architect Mark Cerny filed for the patent through the UPSTO. It specifically mentions “Backward compatibility through use of spoof clock and fine grain frequency control." While patents don't guarantee they'll implement it, they at least confirm Sony's looking into it.
