Seasonal events are a great hook for live service games. With Spooky season upon us it’s high time for Halloween-themed events. Here’s a little breakdown of some games this year that players may want to watch out for.
As always, for Halloween fans can expect new horror-themed skins featuring classic characters like ghosts, zombies, vampires, and mummies. Other games get a little bit more creative.
Apex Legends: Techno Terror
Apex Legends mixes things up a bit with Techno Terror. It's a more cyberpunk-themed Halloween special. The event brings 24-limited time cosmetics to earn, and some special features in the mode to help spice up the battle this time around.
The Techno Terror event has special candy can offer a boost for your character, and there are also Cyber Rev shell grenades to help take down the enemy team. What’s great is there are also these Copycat Kits that will allow you to steal the abilities of other Legends which should make for a more chaotic battlefield for the Halloween season.
Collecting all the limited time cosmetics will earn a player the Pathfinder Apex Mecha prestige skin as a bonus. The event runs from October 15 to November 4.
Call of Duty: Warzone/Modern Warfare 3: The Haunting 2024
Shooter games and the horror genre go hand-in-hand. Since Call of Duty is all about the military-based aesthetics all-year-round, Halloween season one of the few times to have fans enjoy a change of pace. Enter The Haunting event.
For this year, players will be able to get DLC bundles that will give them access to pop-culture horror icons like Halloween’s Michael Myers as well as the Clown from the Terrifier movies.
In partnership with Paramount, the game also has some DLC that give Makarov and Valeria uncanny smiles—all to promote the incoming horror movie Smile 2.
Fortnite - Fornitemares 2024
Fortnite is generally a bloodless franchise. That doesn’t mean the crew over at Epic can’t join in on the Halloween fun. After all, there are cosmetics to be made for all kinds of characters that aren’t superheroes or other game mascots.
For Fortnitemares 2024, the game is going to be bringing a few Halloween-specific cosmetics. They range from all sorts of franchises, including the PG-rated Nightmare Before Christmas and the extremely gory Saw films.
This year, Fortnitemares delivers skins for characters like Billy the Puppet (Saw), the Pumpkin King and Sally (Nightmare Before Christmas), Edward Scissorhands, Leatherface (Texas Chainsaw Massacre), and Disney villains like Cruella de Vil, Captain Hook, and Maleficent. There are even skins for Marvel characters like She-Venom and Mephisto.
As for other content, Fortnite is going to be welcoming weapons like the Saw-inspired Boom Billy remote bomb and Leatherface's chainsaw.
There are also several TV sets scattered throughout the world which feature the Billy puppet, and interacting with it will put you in duel with the nefarious Saw doll.
Dead by Daylight – Haunted by Daylight
Dead by Daylight is spooky all-year-round. The Halloween season is perfect for this slasher movie simulator, though. The game has the Haunted by Daylight event which comes with specially themed skins for both killers and survivors.
Though the killers are all essentially Halloween-themed, the game does give them a brighter flare with more specific spooky imagery like bright orange pumpkins. Not only is there a new skin for the Knight, but a ‘glowing blight’ look for the Xenomorph as well.
Several survivors also get new cosmetics that feature common Halloween iconography like skeletons, spider-webs, and bat wings. Dead by Daylight may be spooky all year, but they managed to make it brighter to celebrate the spooky season. Haunted by Daylight runs until Nov. 6.
Red Dead Online – Undead Nightmare and All Hallows' Call to Arms
Red Dead Online is also getting into the spooky season with the return of the Halloween Pass 2 which will come with some horror-themed items that are perfect for the season. There is also a new mode called All Hallows’ Call to Arms which will have players defending settlements against waves of attackers—some of which aren’t necessarily human.
Playing the Hallows mode will offer players double the rewards, and it will last for the Halloween season.
Overwatch 2 – Halloween Terror 2024
For many Overwatch events are rinse and repeat. Having said that, one of the most beloved is definitely Halloween Terror.
This year though, Blizzard is going to be delivering a new game mode called Junkenstein’s Laboratory which is essentially a new kind of deathmatch that allows players to customize certain skills for characters. For example, it will allow Moira to choose only healing or only damage during her ultimate, or having Genji deflect from every direction when he activates the ability.
If Junkenstein’s Laboratory isn’t your jam though, the Halloween Terror event also brings back several game modes from the past that players can check out. Wrath of the Bride has Sombra as the main villain, and it has players going up against beefed up versions of several characters and hordes of “zomnics” (zombies crossed with omnics).
Season 13 has also been dubbed ‘Spellbinder’ and it has a Hogwarts-themed Widowmaker showing off her magic skills. The game also hasn’t forgotten it’s recent collab with My Hero Academia, and there are MHA-themed skins for characters like Tracer, Reinhardt, and more. Not to mention there is a wealth of Halloween skins that have accumulated over the years, and they’re only ever available to purchase during the spooky season.
Overwatch 2’s Halloween Terror event is here to stay until Nov. 4.
