After a massive announcement during the 2024 Game Awards, CD Projekt RED has confirmed that it'll bring many Witcher fans into the next saga of the franchise with Ciri as the protagonist.
Now older and stronger, Ciri dons the Lynx medallion, takes on the mantle of her adoptive father Geralt, and embarks on her journey as a controversial monster slayer.
While many people look for witchers for their monster problems in The Witcher 4, it would seem that the population still considers witchers to be abominations. This can be another reason why few witchers continue to exist.
Which brings us to the all-new Lynx medallion and the school it represents.
This interesting lore item can now be purchased via CDPR's website but it's more than a collector's item at this point. This medallion highly indicates that there may be a huge time gap between Witcher 3 and Witcher 4, considering how witchers establish witcher schools.
The majority of the witcher schools were founded right after the fall of the Order of the Witchers. Now that Ciri is part of a witcher school herself, it would mean that mages and witchers (ahem, Geralt and Yennefer?) have found a way how to perform mutations and create witchers again.
In the trailer, Ciri is seen to have emerald cat eyes, presumably because she was half-mutated compared to Geralt's full-on yellow cat eyes. Ciri was still able to retain some parts of her when she had her witcher abilities, including her Elder Blood.
Establishing a witcher school, performing the Trial of the Grasses, and eventually converting Ciri into a witcher (or at least part of her) would take a considerable amount of time. The School of the Wolf was established during the 11th century, years after the fall of the Order of Witchers, which makes the founding of the School of the Lynx a bit more challenging.
Even so, there were no more active witcher schools by the end of The Witcher 3, and CDPR might be taking a different approach to the lore considering that the trailer showcased a fully capable witcher Ciri.
Based on the trailer, witchers are still shunned by the society they serve which could mean that they are still surviving the repercussions of the events in The Witcher 3. The villagers are shown to despise Ciri despite saving them from the monster.
This particular social situation has been an important part of the games and has helped CDPR evolve major characters such as Geralt and Vesemir through various social dilemmas. We might witness Ciri again facing the same challenges as Geralt faced, and we might be lucky to see a few rounds of Gwent in between.
