Not even a week after the launch of Destiny 2 The Final Shape, Bungie has offered a roadmap of what players can expect for the next year of Destiny content. While many thought Destiny 3 was on the table, Bungie has instead revealed Destiny 2 Codename Frontiers, a brand-new expansion set for 2025.
During the ‘Destiny 2: The Journey Ahead’ livestream, Bungie teases us with the text “The journey continues.
Codename Frontiers sounds like the start of a new saga for Destiny 2, following the end of its first saga. After The Final Shape missions saw us defeat The Witness and the following Episodes - Echoes, Revenant, and Heresay - tying up loose ends, Frontiers is expected to see Guardians head beyond the Sol system for the first time.
Bungie has yet to reveal further details on the Destiny 2 Codename Frontiers expansion, though it does confirm that Destiny 2 instead of moving onto its long-awaited sequel.
As for the Episodes, Echoes is all about the Vex getting their hands on a fragment of the Traveler - now infused with Light and Darkness - which is terraforming Nessus. The environment has changed significantly, and we’ll get access to several new activities and gear options.
Episode 2: Revenant is a Fallen-themed, “vampire hunter” season in which the Guardians become Slayer Baron, a renowned monster hunter. It follows Fikrul (arguably better known as The Fanatic), likely seeing Crow in pursuit to take down the leader of The Scorn. Episode Revenant will add a potion crafting system. Combat potions boost your artifact, while loot potions give you better control of the rewards you chase.
Episode 3: Heresy is perhaps the most exciting season, dealing with the Hive pantheon. “We want to take the Hive pantheon and shake up the snowglobe,” Bungie explains as it explores the relationships between the Hive Gods. Importantly, Heresy sees the return of the Dreadnaught from Destiny 1’s iconic Taken King expansion - though it’s different than you might remember. “We’re going to give it a whole new purpose,” Bungie claims. In fact, if Codename Frontiers does indeed take us outside of the Sol system, then the Dreadnaught could be the key, as Heresy is the final Episode before this teased expansion.
While these Episodes and the eventual Codename Frontiers expansion will add heaps more content, there’s still plenty to be cracking on with in The Final Shape. Whether it’s hunting down The Final Shape Exotics and Exotic class items or collecting everything from the Salvation’s Edge loot table, Bungie isn’t calling it quits on Destiny 2 quite yet.
