EA has announced that their Origin app for PC will be shutting down. This move is shocking to many PC players since EA was one of the first publishers to make their game launchers. If anything, this goes to show that digital media is fickle and will never be permanent, so players need to be careful about these services.
According to the game publisher’s website, this launcher will be shutting down because “Microsoft has stopped supporting 32-bit software.” Fans have until April 17, 2025, to get the EA app to save whatever game libraries they have. The company has assured fans that all of their games will be safely transferred to this new app.
Gamers who still have 32-bit hardware will need to upgrade to 64-bit, as the EA app will be the latter. It’s an odd way to end the Origin service, but players will get to keep their games, which is always a positive. Still, considering how this launcher will be ending soon, fans might want to take extra measures to keep these games permanently.
Based on a lot of the wording, this feels like a rebranding for the launcher as everything gets moved to the EA app. Still, change is always scary for fans accustomed to doing things a certain way, so this will be a new experience for everyone. All that being said, none of this should be a major concern if gamers can still access their copies of Dragon Age: The Veilguard.
Origin launched back in June 2011, so the launcher has been around for more than a decade. While we doubt this was anyone’s favorite launcher, especially for those who are using Steam or Epic Games, it’s still a major change. Hopefully, this change doesn’t affect anything too major and we see some quality games from the company.
