Though the Amazon series was a hit, Fallout has admittedly been in a slump when it comes to games, with the last release Fallout 76 not really making waves.
While fans wait for a new Fallout announcement, some interesting things have been happening over at Fallout: New Vegas studio Obsidian Entertainment.
John Gonzalez Returns
As Video Games Chronicle has pointed out, the LinkedIn profile of game writer John Gonzalez has confirmed that he’s taken a creative director role in Obsidian Entertainment; no reveal for what game he’s working on has been made, but he does confirm through a description on his profile that it's “not FNV2.”
Though Gonzalez is best known for his work on Fallout: New Vegas, he has worked on several other game titles before like Middle-Earth: Shadow of Mordor and Horizon Zero Dawn; he was also the narrative director for Horizon Forbidden West.
With an extensive background in game narrative, it’s possible that Gonzalez has been brought in for another game besides Fallout. While some might guess that he would be perfect for the Outer Worlds sequel, it’s possible that he could be working on a completely new IP.
The Legacy of Fallout: New Vegas
When it comes to the Fallout franchise, a lot do consider New Vegas to be one of the best Fallout games of all time. The strongest reason that a lot of people point out is that New Vegas had a great story, and compared to the mainline games, it had more narrative choices that gave players actual consequences depending on their choices.
The game came out back in 2010, but even today a lot of people have been saying it’s one of the best to ever come out of the Fallout franchise, and a lot of people had been wanting to come back to this specific place in the wasteland.
New Vegas in the Future
With the television series ending on a tease for New Vegas, there is no doubt there is some renewed interest in the game; and people online who are new to the fandom are curious as to why a lot of veteran players like to put New Vegas on its pedestal.
Fallout co-creators Tim Cain and Leonard Boyarsky said back in 2023 that they were interested in a remaster, and while nothing official has been announced, it’s possible that the TV series could change the opinion of the studio. After all, it’s said that the success of the television show has managed to result in more game sales; so at this point, fans can consider the TV series and games to be intertwined—for now.
With the last mainline Fallout game being considered a dud by some fans, maybe a spinoff based on the more popular titles of the franchise could be the direction for Fallout to go in the meantime. A remaster may be able to keep fans satiated until they’re ready to announce the next mainline game after Fallout 76.
A new Fallout game hasn’t been officially announced.
