Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth - Everything we know so far
Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth is the direct sequel to the Final Fantasy 7 Remake that was released back in 2020. It's set to be the second installation in the Final Fantasy 7 Remake trilogy, and plays out as an action-adventure RPG. Those familiar with the first game will probably know exactly what to expect from this sequel.
Story
The story of Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth will take off from where Final Fantasy 7 Remake ended, with Cloud and the gang finally leaving Midgar and heading to the outside world. Those wishing to avoid spoilers should head over to the next section.
Near the end of the first Final Fantasy 7 Remake, Cloud and the group defeat the Whispers and free themselves from the shackles of a predetermined destiny. This upset a lot of fans who were hoping for a faithful remaster. However, the team at Square Enix insists on telling a new tale. The same is true for Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, and the team has hinted that there will be even more drastic divergences from the original plot.
This does not mean that the original plot will be completely ignored. In fact, the story will most likely follow the same route as the gang searches for the Black Materia to track down Sephiroth. Cloud will also be revealing his backstory to the team here. However, the order of these story beats might be shuffled up, so there's a lot of new content for both veterans and new players to expect.
Gameplay
The gameplay we've seen thus far hasn't showcased too many new features. However, in addition to our initial team of Cloud, Tifa, Barett, and Aerith, we now also have Red 13. Red 13 will have a unique new style of gameplay that employs something called a revenge gauge for counterattacks after blocking.
The original combat system had a blend of real-time combat, party switching, and action point-based commands that you could give to your party. This system was engaging and well-polished, and we can only hope to see that Square Enix has improved it even further.
A new addition that was revealed in a blog post made mention of synergy attacks. These can be performed by using up your charge gauge and are intended to showcase the growing bond between you and your party members.
Last but not least, Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth will be introducing a skill tree system for each character to showcase growth throughout the game.
Side content
In a recent interview on the PlayStation Blog, Game Director Naoki Hamaguchi stated that "in fact, volume-wise, the amount of side content in Final Fantasy VII Rebirth is nearly double that of the main quest content."
He also mentioned that there will be a focus on open-world exploration as the party looks for traces of Sephiroth. The team also went all out in designing the mini-games for Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth. Expect to run into a lot of mini-game content, such as Chocobo Racing, Cloud on a Segway, and Gold Saucer minigames, during both the main story and hidden away during side quests.
That covers all the basics you need to know for Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth for now!
