Final Fantasy VII Rebirth looks like it’s going to be an amazing game, with many of us hoping Square Enix nails the landing with the third part. We don’t know what Square will do after the trilogy wraps up, but one of the game’s producers said he would be open to doing an HD-2D Final Fantasy 6 remake.
Yoshinori Kitase was speaking with Eurogamer about possibly remaking the sixth entry, as Square previously said it would take 20 years to remake the SNES classic from scratch. Although a full remake like Final Fantasy VII probably won’t happen, Kitase said he is open to making an HD-2D remake for Final Fantasy 6.
"I don't have any particular plans," Kitase told the publication. "But I think certainly if there is a developer within the company who wants to use that style - or even another style they feel that's really the best approach for the game that they're remaking and that's the style the fans will want to see it in - I definitely think that's a possibility and they could very much work with it. I'd be very happy to see that."
Square Enix has had great success with the HD-2D style, with the Octopath Traveller games and Live A Live remake reviewing really well. The company is also using this style for their Dragon Quest 3 remake, though news on that game has been pretty slow. Needless to say, JRPG fans are chomping at the bit to play that remake.
While Final Fantasy 6 hasn’t made the same impact as its successor, many fans do say that it’s one of the company’s finest JRPGs. Although the game has never been fully remade, we have seen various remasters for it on the PS1 and GBA. Recently, the company even remade it in the Pixel Remaster-style.
