Final Fantasy XIV continues to be the most dominant MMORPG available right now, with the upcoming Dawntrail expansion only making this game stronger. Back in 2019, a live-action show based on the game was announced, but one of the studio’s co-founders has since said the project is dead.
Hivemind co-founder Dinesh Shamdasani was asked on Twitter if the live-action series was still happening and he said that it’s pretty much dead. Shamdasani does confirm that a script for the pilot was made, alongside a plan for the whole season, but no studio picked it up. Apparently, Amazon was the closest to consider it, but they still said no.
“Dead,” Shamdasani said to the fan. “We took around a fantastic pilot script by Ben Lustig & Jake Thornton along with a multi-season plan they built with our showrunners but got rejected across the board. The size and scale needed to do it right proved too much for anyone to want to risk. Amazon came closest.”
Shamdasani was then asked if there was a chance the Final Fantasy XIV series could be animated instead, but he said it would actually be harder. After that, he then confirmed that the rights to this show have revered back to its Japanese owners, so the show is pretty much dead right now.
Considering the success of adaptations like The Last of Us and One Piece, one would assume that these studios would jump at the chance to make a Final Fantasy show. Then again, the game is quite fantastical and would need a huge budget, which is probably why plans for this show were scrapped.
Maybe we’ll get a Final Fantasy XIV show in the future but it looks like this project is dead right now. Fans will be able to enjoy the Dawntrail expansion at least, with more content coming to the game in the future.
