The long-rumoured Fortnite Doctor Who crossover event has been denied by series showrunner Russell T Davies. Originally leaked prior to the show’s return last year, the crossover event allegedly never existed in the first place.
With Disney partnering with Epic Games to bring its IP to Fortnite as well as publishing Doctor Who internationally, the long-reported collaboration was finally expected to go through.
Via our sister site StealthOptional, the previously reported crossover was planned as a two-week event that would allow you to play as the 14th Doctor (David Tenant) and 15th Doctor (Ncuti Gatwa). Dataminers even found references to Beep the Meep and The TARDIS in the game.
However, in the comments of a recent Instagram post, Russell T Davies confirmed that there are no plans for an official Doctor Who crossover. While developers at Epic Games may have been working on a pitch internally, the BBC and production company Bad Wolf Studios haven’t signed off on anything.
When asked for information on the Fortnite Doctor Who event, Davies said: “There isn’t one! It’s a complete myth, I’m afraid.”
Fans of the show instantly responded with disappointment following the showrunner’s reveal. Some even mentioned the fact that dataminers have uncovered evidence of an event that was in the works at some point.
“I’m devastated about this! Hopefully there will be in the future,” one fan said. “Shame. Would be an insane fun collab, definitely hope for one in the future,” said another.
“You’ve got to be joking,” one fan brazenly said. “It’s literally in the files, you’re just winding us up.”
While the Doctor Who collaboration may have been worked on at some point, it’s unsurprising that the event isn’t going ahead. When the event was first reported, fans of the series expressed discomfort at the thought of The Doctor mowing down enemies with various forms of weaponry. Yes, The Doctor has done a great deal of murdering in the past, but that’s not his bag anymore.
At the time of writing, Fortnite is currently going through an awesome Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles event. While it doesn’t make up for the game’s recent infuriating changes to V-Bucks or its annoying new Locker system, it’s a brilliant event for fans of the heroes with a half-shell.
Fortnite is currently available to play for free on Xbox, PlayStation, PC, Nintendo Switch and mobile.
