Since its launch back in 2004, Garry's Mod has been one of the most iconic games on the Steam storefront. While it's not as popular as it once was, the game still sees tens of thousands of players everyday, with numerous game modes like DarkRP and Prop Hunt still fan favorites.
However, while Garry's Mod is still a great experience to play on PC, Facepunch Studios' next title is almost a spiritual successor. While GMod brought us memes like Skibidi Toilet, the next title seemingly aims to bring a mix of the beloved Garry's Mod with Roblox, allowing users to develop individual games in a Sandbox experience.
Aptly titled Sandbox (stylized as s&box), the successor of Garry's Mod has been in development since 2015, with a heavy focus on virtual reality with the best VR headsets. While it started in Unreal Engine, the developer switched to Source 2 for Sandbox, which is the successor of Valve's Source engine and what Garry's Mod was developed in. However, after almost a decade of waiting, Sandbox is now playable.
You need to head to the Sandbox developer preview site to get access to the current build of the game, but you'll have to login to the s&box site with your Steam account. However, once you click on the image to join the preview program, the game will be added to your library.
Of course, since this is a developer preview of the game, it's not in the best state. Many user-generated or developer-created game modes may be broken, buggy, or worse, but this will be the first opportunity that many get to play the Garry's Mod successor after years of waiting, myself included.
Hopefully, it won't be long until s&box is ready for the masses. After two decades of enjoying Garry's Mod and watching as different generations of gamers enjoy the strange physics-based sandbox game, it would certainly be fitting if s&box released around the 20th anniversary of the original mod.
