Gears of War was considered a hot Xbox property at one point, but diminishing returns have led to fans being unenthused by the third-person shooter franchise. Despite titles like Gears 5 being quite well received, series creator Cliff Bleszinski feels that it’s time for the series to go down the God of War route.
During an interview with ComicBook.com, Bleszinski stated that the series should have a “little bit of a reboot” like God of War did in 2018. Bleszinski did say that this was more of an idea than anything else, though does point out that Xbox boss Phil Spencer has his number.
"I've always said, Phil Spencer has my number," Spencer said to the website. "I'm happy to consult. Gears will always be near and dear to my heart."
While Gears 5 did get good reviews, many fans feel that the overall Gears of War series is a bit stale right now. There’s been a few rumblings about a possible HD collection, but nothing new about this franchise has been hinted at over the past few years. Perhaps a soft reboot would do the series some good, especially since its audience and creators are a lot older now.
PlayStation fans were shocked to see God of War get a soft reboot in 2018, seemingly resetting the series. Although the gameplay is completely different, everything from the PS2, PSP, and PS3 games are still canon but are looked back on differently. Kratos, despite originally being a crazed lunatic who loved killing, is now a sympathetic father and the same can be done for Marcus Fenix.
Gears of War has always been known as an attitude-filled shooter, but the series does have its fair share of sombre moments. Many fans remember that moment with Dom Santiago’s wife, which has haunted Xbox players to this day. It shouldn’t be too hard to have a more serious reboot with this series.
