While some GTA Online players are still trying to enjoy everything that Los Santos has to offer by getting up to wacky hijinks and spending all of their hard-earned cash, others are already looking forward to GTA 6.
For many, this has meant diverting their attention to trying to predict what its map will look like, compiling a feature wish list for GTA Online 2 or simply agonising over what'll happen to their current fortune when the new game eventually arrives.
However, in the case of one GTA player, this wave of anticipation has prompted them to put forth a rather controversial opinion regarding what the ideal version of GTA 6 could look like, suggesting that it shouldn’t have an online element at all.
Do you think GTA 6’s online component could detract from its single-player experience?
This suggestion is the topic of a thread on the GTA 6 subreddit, which began with a post from the aforementioned player, user justaguyj96, who started off by simply stating: “I don't want GTA 6 Online to exist.”
Luckily, they did stick around to provide a justification for their viewpoint, recalling that they found GTA 5’s story mode very fun and immersive upon release, but have seen it be overlooked for updates in favour of GTA Online, which they’ve struggled to enjoy as much due to its main character being mute and also because of the grinding that’s often required to making money.
Naturally, their fellow players were quick to respond with their own feelings on the impact that GTA Online’s prioritisation has had on GTA 5’s single-player elements, with user dropssupreme saying: “I remember the DLC that were rumoured to be added to the solo mode to extend the story and change the map a little. Nothing happened and I had such a bittersweet taste in my mouth.” and Chromehounds2 adding: “I wish game companies would just concentrate on the campaign and add grand DLCs for it.”
On the other hand, many users suggested that they’d gotten more enjoyment out of Online than single player, with McDonalds_Toothpaste arguing: “I'll never understand why people complain about GTA Online. I've put hundreds of hours into it without ever spending a cent of my own money, and Rockstar has added a lot to it over the years all for no charge.”
Others weren’t quite as straightforward in their praise of the mode, claiming that it was great at first, but in recent years has suffered due to an apparent rise in the presence of hackers and griefers.
Meanwhile, some took a more practical perspective on the inclusion of an online mode, with user LTC-trader contending that it “will fund the next GTA” and others agreeing that the financially lucrative status of the original GTA Online would make not including a new version with GTA 6 a very bold choice indeed.
