While a lot of GTA Online players aren't exactly short on money, having dedicated themselves to the grind, few of them would turn their noses up at a free car.
After all, when you’ve spent days completing daring heists and dangerous sales missions with your dedicated crew in order to boost your in-game bottom line and buy a new ride, it’s not nice to discover there’s no cash left over to customise your new whip.
One player on Reddit is definitely feeling this pain, having highlighted the fact that some stolen cars being considered ‘too hot’ to customise is still a little bit confusing.
Do you think GTA Online should encourage players to steal cars rather than buying them?
This opinion is the subject of a recent thread in the GTA Online subreddit, which began with a post from the player in question, user Art3hollywood, who shared an image of them unsuccessfully trying to take a stolen sports car into a branch of Los Santos Customs, captioning it: “I thought this game was called Grand Theft Auto for a reason.”
GTA’s hardened veterans were quick to point out that this isn’t a new phenomenon, with user CrazyCatBreath explaining: “You must be brand new. You can't steal high end cars, You have to buy those. You can only steal low end cars.” and handertizer adding: “We all remember that deflated feeling when we first saw this message.”
Others pointed out that the car in question was not only high-end, but also likely belonged to another player due to its modifications, making stealing it even more of a temporary arrangement.
Meanwhile, user AxlSt00pid argued that the name of the game should be changed to: “Legally Purchase Auto Online”, with Interesting_Pilot_13 adding that it also contains an: “Ignore All Traffic Laws DLC.”
User geosmin7 pointed out that legally purchasing cars with stolen money makes the game a little unrealistic, musing: “You'd think it would be the opposite, that we'd just steal what we wanted directly and hide our activities behind legitimate businesses, since that's what actual criminals do. But no.”
On the other hand, user thatguy11m suggested: “At this point, every car seen in free roam should be allowed to be kept. Pretty sure nothing over $500k exists in free roam. Just bomb the resale value to (a maximum of) $20k, so people can't abuse it to make money.”
