After 3 years of waiting, fans of the original GTA Trilogy are in for a treat with Rockstar Games' latest update for the Definitive Edition. The update is now live for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S, PC, and Switch.

While the official patch notes are shorter than those of GTA V's multi-generation releases, X user @SynthPotato has shared a detailed list of what players can expect from the update.

The update includes improvements such as fog and combat, and we've got the complete list for you to check out:

  • Classic Lighting
    • All three games now have Classic Lighting modes that update the visuals to resemble the original games.
  • Fog
    • Volumetric Fog can now be seen in the games.
  • Removed Grove Street Games in the intro and main menu
  • Combat Update
    • Players can now aim and use shotguns and rifles while running and strafing in GTA 3 and GTA Vice City.
  • Fixed Character Models
    • Character skeletons are now fixed with proper posture.
    • CJ no longer hunches weirdly when crouching.
  • Removed Parallax Interiors
  • Weather and Cloud Updates
    • Players can now fly through clouds.
    • All different weathers can now be seen in GTA San Andreas
  • Minor Quality-of-Life Improvements
    • Players can now pause during cutscenes

One notable change is the removal of Grove Street Games from the game, considering that they were the original developers of the trilogy. Now that GTA VI is just on the horizon, Rockstar Games may be being careful with future collaborations.

These updates were needed so badly at launch that many GTA fans were disappointed with the Definitive Edition's lack of visual fidelity compared to the original games.

The initial launch of the Definitive Edition was far from many players' expectations. Even our senior editor, Alister Kennedy, shared that he was "disappointed at the launch of the PS5 version and ended up double-dipping on Switch as I could overlook the issues playing on a less powerful system. I am glad to see Rockstar stepping in to fix things. I will be downloading it again to see the changes made."

Rockstar Games' showing care for the trilogy indicates that they will take their time to make GTA VI better than its predecessors.

Now that these have been added after three years, longtime GTA fans have more reason to take a trip down nostalgia lane and celebrate before the launch of GTA VI.
