Farming is not a mandatory mechanic to progress through Once Human, as players can often gather consumables or resources through exploration and combat. However, farming becomes a highly beneficial skill for those who want to maintain a steady supply of valuable consumables without having to venture out constantly.

The Automated Irrigation System streamlines and enhances farming by automatically watering crops. In this article, we will explore how this system works and how to create one.

Grow those crops efficiently!

To create an Automated Irrigation System in Once Human, you must first progress through the Logistics tech tree in the Memetics System, reaching Tier 4, unlocking the sprinkler system and grow lights.

After unlocking these, gather the necessary materials to build the core components. Start by setting up the Rainwater Collection System on the top of a three-story structure. This system can be constructed using the following resources:

  • 30 Logs: Logs are a basic resource gathered by chopping down trees in forests or wild areas. Use an axe to cut down trees, and you’ll collect logs in the process. They are a common building material used for a wide range of structures.
  • 15 Shabby Fabrics: This material is often looted from abandoned buildings, containers, or defeated humanoid enemies. You can also gather fabric by scavenging in places like old factories, schools, and towns where textiles might be left behind.
  • 5 Rubber: This material can be sourced from industrial locations, vehicle salvage sites, or old tires and mechanical wrecks in the environment. You’ll typically find rubber by breaking down old cars or scavenging areas rich in mechanical debris.

After gathering the materials, position them in an open space to gather rainwater and ensure there is no roof above it to collect rainwater effectively.

The rainwater must be filtered before use, so next, construct a Water Filter to purify the collected water. The filter works by cleaning the contaminated water, and the following supplies are needed to build it:

  • 50 Logs
  • 15 Adhesives: This is often crafted using materials like resin and tree sap, both of which can be harvested from specific trees or found in forested areas. Adhesive can also sometimes be found in industrial zones or as loot in containers.
  • 20 Charcoal - This is crafted by burning wood in a Furnace or similar crafting station. Place logs into the furnace and run them to produce charcoal, which is used in various crafting recipes, including water filtration systems.
  • 15 Steel Ingots - Crafted by combining Iron Ore with Coal in a Smelter. You can gather Iron Ore by mining in rocky, mountainous areas or resource nodes. Coal is often mined in similar areas, and once you have both, you can smelt them into steel.

The automated irrigation system is not required but it will help your time management

Afterward, set up a large Water Pump on the ground floor to source water from the area, which will need the following materials:

  • 25 Steel Ingots
  • 20 Carbon Fiber Fabric: This is a more advanced crafting material usually found in high-tech zones or created using synthetic materials. Carbon Fiber Fabric can be scavenged from wrecks, mechanical parts, and industrial sites, or it can be crafted if you unlock the necessary tech tree upgrades.
  • 20 Refined Parts & 20 Standard Parts: These components are commonly found in industrial areas or looted from mechanical enemies. They can also be crafted by breaking down other mechanical items such as gears or devices found in abandoned workshops.
  • 20 Electronic Accessories: These are looted from high-tech areas or scavenged from old electronics, such as computers or other machinery. You’ll find these materials in laboratories, industrial zones, and advanced buildings.

The pump should also be powered by a solar generator (requiring about 16W) and connected to the filter, which will purify the water. The clean water can be stored in a tank for later use.

Once the water is ready, connect the storage tank to the sprinkler system, which will automatically water your crops. You can adjust the sprinkler system to provide the right amount of water for each type of plant.

In areas where natural light is limited, you will need to install Grow Lights, which are also unlocked at Tier 4. These lights need to be powered and can be located above the crops to ensure consistent exposure to light for healthy growth.

After you have powered and connected everything, your irrigation system will ensure that your crops receive automatic watering. This setup allows for uninterrupted farming, even while you’re away, as the crops will also be lit consistently.
