Is Cyberpunk 2077 A Sequel?

Cyberpunk 2077 is just about to release and players from across the globe cannot wait to get their hands on it!

But, with how rich and full the world seems already, many are worried there may have been previous games in the series that they’ve missed out on.

If you are one of these worried players, we’re here to alleviate your fears and tell you whether Cyberpunk 2077 is a sequel or not!

Is Cyberpunk 2077 a Sequel?

The short answer is no but it isn’t the simplest.

This is CD Projekt Red’s first Cyberpunk RPG video game, but this isn’t the first time players may have visited Night City.

Cyberpunk 2077 is based on Mike Pondsmith's Cyberpunk franchise, much like how The Witcher game series was based on books by Andrzej Sapkowski.

Mike Pondsmith is a well-known role-playing and board game maker, with Cyberpunk being one of these creations.

The most recent is Cyberpunk Red which released this year, in 2020.

Cyberpunk Red is also the furthest forward in the timeline, being set in 2045.

This means that Cyberpunk 2077, the video game, takes place 32 years in the future of the world Cyberpunk Red.

Do You Have To Play Cyberpunk Red?

No, almost definitely not.

Given the nature of tabletop games, there won’t be a major cannon timeline for specific characters or locations as they may or may not die or change depending on the player’s choices.

This means that if any characters introduced in the Cyberpunk tabletop games make an appearance in 2077, they’ll probably be reintroduced to the new audience, and also to establish the official fate that befalls them.

Similarly, while all of the Cyberpunk games take place in Night City, the Cyberpunk 2077 Night City will again be fully introduced to players to ensure everyone starts off on the same foot.

So while Cyberpunk 2077 technically takes place after the other games, you don’t have to worry about playing them, Cyberpunk 2077 isn’t a sequel in that sense.

Though, as an avid tabletop fan, they can be a lot of fun so might be worth checking out for that reason!
