Is Xbox Getting VR?

If you have an Xbox Series X or Series S laying around and are wondering how to take advantage of all of its power, then knowing if your Xbox is getting VR could be a pretty big deal.

Here's everything you need to know on the matter, plus a handy guide and some of the latest rumours on what's happening in the world of VR.

Is Xbox Getting VR?

In terms of official support, probably not. A recent interview from Phil Spencer, the current head of the Xbox brand for Microsoft, confirmed that the VR space isn't one that Microsoft is currently looking at getting into, as they are more focused on software like Xbox Game Pass.

With that being said, Microsoft are supposedly planning their own 3D metaverse in the Xbox space which could arguably open them up to developing a VR headset in the future, if the metaverse plans go ahead.

Do Any VR Headsets Work With Xbox?

Just because there isn't a Microsoft-engineered headset out there doesn't mean that the Xbox consoles don't support VR entirely, and luckily, there is a candidate out there that does.

Luckily, the Oculus Rift S, thanks to an officially supported app from the Oculus store, can work with an Xbox One and allow you to play both One and Xbox 360 games, just as long as your PC is connected to the same network as your Xbox is. There's no word on whether this looks to work with Series consoles, unfortunately.

Unfortunately, the same doesn't look to be true for the Oculus Quest 2, officially at least, but given that it has a big games library already and can work as an untethered headset with no need for a PC, the loss of Xbox support isn't as big as you might initially have thought.

If you do want to try out your Quest 2 with your new Xbox, there is a way around it. What you'll need to do is install Xbox Console Companion on your PC, allow game streaming on your console to get a feed on your PC and then install the VR Virtual Desktop system on both your PC and Quest 2.

Once you've done this, then you launch Virtual Desktop to then mirror your PC screen to the Quest 2, launch the Xbox app with streaming enabled, and away you go. It may not be the most convenient way around it, but if you desperately want to try it, you can.

Could The Meta Quest Pro Work With Xbox?

From Oculus (now Meta thanks to Facebook's rebranding), one of their heavily rumoured new devices is a headset known as Project Cambria, a headset that has otherwise been coined as the Meta Quest Pro.

We don't know if the Meta Quest Pro could work with Xbox, but given the headset has been touted as having rather high-end specs, then it could make sense for it to work in conjunction with next-gen consoles given their own power, and with Oculus' previous ties to Microsoft, this would also make some business sense too.

This addition of full-on VR support alongside the fact the Xbox Series X supports 1440p with the potential to also support 8K output in the future when the feature is enabled, could make it the ultimate console of its generation.

We'll be back with you soon with more VR news and info, so be sure to check back in with us soon, and don't forget that the Meta Quest 3 could be on its way to us, alongside the Quest Pro.
