While a lot of video game universes have begun to make the somewhat inevitable transition into TV and film via adaptations in the past few years, it seems there’s still some traffic going the other way.

In this particular case, the trend isn’t in the form of games based on existing film franchises or TV series, but well-known directors giving their two cents on the medium.

The latest of these Hollywood elites to speak about their love of gaming is Halloween and The Thing director John Carpenter, who discussed the industry during a recent interview with The New Yorker.

Which games do you think your favourite directors can’t get enough of?

Having admitted that he plays games in his spare time, the horror legend was asked whether he thinks modern games share elements with cinema, answering that while there are some similarities, he believes that the need for player interaction is what separates games from movies.

He also adds that he doesn’t think the games industry has reached its full potential, citing its relative youth in comparison to other creative mediums.

In terms of his own love of games, Carpenter cites 1992’s Sonic the Hedgehog 2 as his entry point into gaming, adding that despite being out of his depth at that point, his son later helped to properly initiate him to the medium by showing him some other platformers and the Halo series.

Currently, Carpenter cites Fallout 76 and Horizon Forbidden West as some of his favourites, acknowledging the former’s rather difficult post-launch period and saying that he plays a mixture of recent releases and older titles.

On the other hand, Carpenter suggests that he hasn’t been able to get into Red Dead Redemption 2 because the control scheme is seemingly too complex, leading him to abandon the game following an epic struggle to mount his trusty steed.
