The big finale to last night’s PlayStation Showcase was a real treat for fans of superhero games, with a lengthy look at Marvel’s Spider Man 2 offering both introductions to its colourful cast of characters, and a preview of what it’ll be like from a gameplay perspective.
If you were one of the massive Marvel fans who’d spent the entire broadcast waiting to catch a glimpse of Spidey, which also featured the likes of Final Fantasy 16, Metal Gear Solid: Snake Eater and the controversially digital-only Alan Wake 2, odds are you’ve already combed through that section of the show several times.
That’s certainly what fans on Reddit have been doing, with some thinking that one scene from the trailer might hint at the possibility of Miles having to take on Peter Parker in a boss battle, an idea many seem not too keen on.
Are you hoping you won’t have to fight Peter Parker’s intimidating symbiote form in Marvel’s Spider-Man 2?
Their symbiote slug-fest inspired fears can be found in a recent thread on the subreddit r/SpidermanPS4, which user Lost-Lu kicked off by posting a few shots of Parker flexing his tendrils in the reveal, which you can check out below, and suggesting: “[Maybe] this is the boss battle we're gonna have to survive as Miles…”
While some of their fellow Marvel buffs simply got caught up in appreciating how cool the game’s version of symbiote Parker looks while brooding in the darkness, others began speculating as to what having to face him in combat might be like.
“That burrowing, tendril wave attack he did on the henchmen [in the reveal]... yeah, (I’m terrified) to be on the receiving end of that.” said Lost-Lu in response to another user simply suggesting that they’ll be frozen in fear the entire clash.
“It's gonna be like [battling Darth] Vader in [Star Wars Jedi:] Fallen Order”, predicted user Quick_Zone_4570, with a couple of others agreeing that it could be a fight Miles is designed to lose, in order to convey the powerful nature of his opponent, or just has to try and survive.
On the other hand, user Fun_Section_9509 suggested: “What if it’s the other way around? You play as Peter and you just wail on Miles. Imagine how terrifying and horrifying it would be to have to beat on your friend to progress the game. Kinda like in the evil ending of Infamous 2 where you have to fight Nix and Zeke as Cole.”
Similarly, a number of would-be heroes proposed that having Fun_Section_9509’s idea be an optional outcome based on certain player choices would add even more weight to the dramatic and emotive nature of it.
Regardless of whether you’re hoping to see exactly what this darker version of Peter Parker can do when Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 arrives, make sure to follow us for updates on it and the other games shown off and announced during the PlayStation broadcast.
